John 14:16
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counsellor to be with you forever – the Spirit of Truth
Last week in our audio worship posted on our website, we read John 14:1-14. In this narrative Jesus comforts his disciples by telling them that he will soon be going away to abide in and with his Father. But in his farewell discourse he promises that he will prepare a place for us so that we can join him. Today’s reading continues this speech where Jesus promises them that when he has gone, the Holy Spirit will come and be their counselor. The Holy Spirit will lead them into truth, they will not be alone, and that they belong to God as God’s children.
And this is what happens.
Next week we celebrate the Ascension of Jesus. And the week after that we celebrate Pentecost when the Holy Spirit – with the sound of a wind – came from heaven and settled on those gathered.
We can trust God’s promises. Even now we are not alone, as children of God we belong to him, and the Spirit still leads us into truth if we listen carefully and discern the way the Spirit is moving in our lives.
I am very hopeful for the movement of the Spirit in your lives and in the congregational life of Living Water. Be still and know that God is faithful. Can you hear that still, quiet and gentle voice?
